Aromatherapy is not only about curing it is also an important part of preventative medicine, especially for athletes and fitness enthusiasts.
If you play a sport or work out on a regular basis, you may want to add some essential oils to your sports kit to help you stay in great form. Because many oils have antiseptic, anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties they are great for preventing strains and sprains, relieving pain and some can even help to improve stamina. If you are new to the idea of aromatherapy for sports injury prevention and you are already suffering from a strain, you can also use them to help you recover quicker.
Aromatherapy Oils for Sports Massage
Sports massage is an important part of athletics both before and after exercises of a competition. Pre-exercise a massage help stretch and warm up the muscles to prevent injury. Post-exercise massage helps cool the muscles down and reduce the build-up of lactic acid. To make a massage oil you will need a carrier oil such as grapeseed oil, hazelnut oil or sweet almond oil. Mix 30 drops of carrier oil to every ounce of essential oil blend. Mix together in a dark glass bottle (to help preserve to oil from light), and shake vigorously. The oil is ready to use immediately. Essential oils that have anti-inflammatory properties include clove, rose, thyme, fennel, bergamot, eucalyptus and helichrysum. Pain-relieving essential oils include rosemary, lavender, sandalwood, clary sage, helichrysum and German chamomile.
Essential oils and your total performance
Aside from injury prevention, essential oils can help to boost your total performance in the gym or on the track. As you known, why you are exercising you body relies on your blood circulation to transport sufficient oxygen and vital nutrients to all your cells and organs. Whatever kind of physical activity you are performing, essential oils can help to keep your circulation flowing optimally. For this effect you will need to choose essential oils that have a stimulating effect such as juniper, black pepper, lemon, cedar, bergamot, cypress, rose and geranium. You can add a single oil or a blend of 3 to 5 drops of your favorites to you carrier oil and rub them onto your skin at least and hour prior to working out.
Clean up sweat and prevent fungus
If you have an aroma problem with your gym shoes or bag, essential oils can come to the rescue. They will not only clear up sweaty smells, they will also prevent the growth of bacteria that thrives in sweaty places. Mix 1 cup of baking soda and 1 cup of cornstarch, add to the mix 15 drops of bergamot oil and 15 drops of sandalwood oil. Mix thoroughly so that you don’t lose any of the oil, and then sift. Sprinkle a fine layer the powder over the insoles of your gym shoes, bag and any other equipment that smells sweaty. Leave the powder their overnight then vacuum in the morning. You will be amazed at the difference. If you want a portable solution to help keep your gear back or your locker smelling fresh and to prevent bacteria, drop 15-20 drops of either essential oil of lavender or cedar on a piece of cloth and place it in either place. It will last for weeks.
