Blackheads are caused when sebum (the oil produced by the sebaceous glands that lubricates the skin) combine with skin pigment and clog the pores. Factors that contribute to the condition are stress, heredity, oily skin, the use of cosmetics and overwashing or repeated rubbing of the skin.
