Overview: |
|
Ylang Ylang is
a base or middle note oil, said to helpful in dealing with anxiety,
panic, and shock. It is also believed to assist with feelings of resentment,
guilt and/or jealousy.
The oil is steam
distilled from the flowers of a tall tree native to the Phillipines
and Far East. The name means 'flower of flowers' - these flowers come
in many colors, with the yellow ones said to produce the highest quality
oils.
Ylang Ylang is
also known to have a balancing impact on one's hormonal system, and
has been said to have substantial aphrodisiac qualities - thus its common
use in sensual massage. In Indonesia Ylang Ylang flower petals are strewn
upon the bed on wedding nights.
The oil blends
well with Clary Sage, Geranium, Lavender, and Cedarwood oils.
Ylang Ylang can
irritate sensitive skin, and care should be taken when using on individuals
with fragrance related sensitivities.

Truffled
Mashed Potatoes
Truffles
are not only for the very rich anymore!
A dish
perfect as an accompaniment to a romantic Valentine's Day meal,
infused with the intense flavor and scent of black truffle oil...
mmmm!
|
|
|
|
| 2
medium baking potatoes |
| 1/2
cup milk |
| 1
tablespoon black truffle oil |
| salt
and pepper |
|
|
Cut potatoes
into 1 1/2 inch cubes. Place in a medium saucepan and cover with
cold water. Bring to a boil and cook until tender, about 20 minutes.
Process into a bowl with a ricer, or use a masher. Add milk, truffle
oil, and salt and pepper to taste, and blend until smooth.
Note: do not
use a blend or food processor to mash potatoes - they will turn
into a gluey mess more suited for spackling than eating!

Did You Know |
|
Ylang ylang was once a popular ingredient of hair
preparations in Europe, and was known as Macassar oil. The
word "anti-macassar" originated from this, since an anti-maccasar was
used to keep hair oil from staining upholstered furniture.
Not
so romantic, but interesting!

Recipe of the Month |
|
"I
can't think of a better Valentine blend than equal parts of any rose
oil (preferably not an absolute, for therapeutic value) and sandalwood
oil.
It is the perfect "marriage" of feminine and masculine oils. Add this
blend to an equal amount of jojoba oil to create a wonderful anointing
oil."
Thanks
to Lisa for her suggestion!
