Build Your Summer First Aid Kit
reprint of an article assembled by staff writers

Summer is almost here, and with it comes more time to spend in the great outdoors. Unfortunately, more time outdoors means we are more prone to insect bites, sunburn, and muscle aches from the extra activity.

Essential oils are a natural way to relieve the common ailments that most of us experience during the summer months. So, to get you started, we have prepared a list of our favorite "must haves" for your summer first aid kit.

Start with the basics - a clean cloth that can be used for hot and cold compresses, or to clean the area prior to treatment, bandaids, a carrier oil, and some aloe vera gel to quickly soothe those barbecue burns, or tender sundrenched skin.

How Laughing is Good For Your Health
by John Ryan

When thinking about alternative medicine, most people picture plants, crystals, needles, maybe some bugs and leeches, but few realize that jokes, humor and comedy are truly medicines, in their own right.

It has long been established that optimists live longer than pessimists, but now there is some hard evidence that people with a better sense of humor also have longer and healthier lives. Your "stay healthy" plan should include a joke and a 20-minute comedy show, to go with the broccoli and carrots.

There are now various associations and physicians specialized in the so-called therapeutic humor, who are still investigating the roles of laughter in our lives. Perhaps the most obvious of these roles is that related to the social life - jokes often allow people to connect and to bond, and sharing a good laughter is a good method to integrate...

  Essential Oil of the Month

Clove Oil

Latin: Caryophyllum aromaticus
Scent: Sweet, Spicy, Fresh
Properties:
Analgesic, Expectorant, Stimulant
Uses:

Bronchitis, indigestion, infection, insect repellent, toothache

General Overview:

Clove is considered a base note oil, and is highly valued for its antiseptic and pain killing properties - one reason that it is now commonly used in dentistry as a natural infection fighter, and toothache remedy.

Cloves are actually the dried buds of the clove tree. Used in China for more than two thousand years, legend has it that cloves are also an aphrodisiac. You may be more likely to recall cloves being used in your mom's holiday ham - the reason being that its use helped the ham to keep for days longer - plenty more sandwiches!

Studies show that the oil in cloves can help kill several strains of staphylococcus bacteria - this is because one of its main components is eugenol - a well known bacteria fighter!

Given the season, it should also be noted that Clove oil is a common ingredient in many aromatic insect repellent recipes!

Clove oil combines well with Lavender, Orange, and Ylang Ylang oils.

Dijon Lavender Salmon Cakes

The scent of lavender is truly magical, and conjures tranquil and healing benefits to the soul...

1 tablespoon olive oil
1 large shallot, minced
2 teaspoons dried lavender
2 - 6 ounce cans boneless, skinless salmon
1 teaspoon grated lemon zest
1 teaspoon grated fresh lemon juice
1 1/2 tablespoons Dijon mustard
1/3 cup dried breadcrumbs
1 egg

mixed baby greens and balsamic vinaigrette, for serving

In a small skillet, heat the oil over high heat and sauté the shallot for 3 minutes. Add the lavender and quickly salute, until the lavender aroma is released. Remove from heat and let cool.

Flake the salmon into a mixing bowl. Add the lemon zest, lemon juice, mustard, breadcrumbs, egg, and the cooled shallot/lavender mixture. Combine with a fork until well blended. Form the mixture into eight small cakes, and place on a plate lined with waxed paper. Cover with another sheet of waxed paper and refrigerate for 30 minutes.

Heat a non stick skillet over medium heat. Cook the salmon cakes until they are nicely browned on both sides, about 5 minutes per side. To serve, toss the greens with some vinaigrette and place onto four small plates. Place two salmon cakes on each plate, and drizzle the cakes with a little more vinaigrette. Enjoy!

 Did You Know

Straining herb based aromatic oils is more than a recommendation. Although the idea of leaving herbs for visual appeal is tempting, many herbs will begin to grow molds in oil, and raw garlic stored in oil can become toxic! Keep your cheesecloth handy...
