Aromatherapy & Pregnancy
by Teshan Laucirica, published by the Aromatherapy Journal, NAHA

Whether planned or not, pregnancy always launches changes both physically and emotionally. These changes can start almost instantly, but are always unique to each woman. In some way, the best thing we can do is to relate our personal experiences. In this spirit, I would like to describe some of the problems that I had and the ways I used aromatherapy during my own pregnancy.

There is, still, a huge misconception that pregnancy must be a miserable experience that scars you for life. This is simply not true; there are so many simple things that can gently and deeply improve your quality of life and help you navigate the new stresses and strains of your pregnancy. It is often considered a beautiful and meaningful time in a woman's life, and is an opportunity to be full of reflection on life, its meaning, and the ways in which life changes as we grow - not simply older, but also emotionally and physically...

  Essential Oil of the Month

Peppermint

Latin: Mentha Piperita
Scent: Fresh, strong, grassy, minty
Effects: Stimulating
Properties:
Antiseptic, decongestant, digestive aid
Uses:

Asthma, sinusitis, migraines, indigestion, morning sickness

General Overview:

Peppermint has been in use for hundreds of years, primarily for the treatment of digestive issues. Many of us will have partaken in a cup of Peppermint Tea to aid with a stomach issue of one sort or another, and as this month's author notes, the tea is highly sought after by new mothers suffering from the perils of morning sickness.

The plant is widely available in France, Italy, North America. Oil is generally achieved through steam distillation of the leaves, and the flowering tops.

Peppermint has also been used as a mosquito repellent, and is said to each tension headaches when diluted, and massaged into the temple.

Peppermint is considered a top note oil, and combines especially well with Eucalyptus, and Rosemary oils.

Minty Taboulleh

The combination of citrus, mint, and parsley just screams refreshing! Summer's perfect side...

8 green onions
1 teaspoon oil
1 cup couscous
1 cup water

4 cups chopped parsley
1/2 cup chopped mint
3 plum tomatoes, seeded and chopped
4 tablespoons lemon juice
4 tablespoons lime juice
1 garlic clove, crushed
3/4 cup olive oil
salt and pepper

Coat the green onions with a little bit of oil, and season with salt and pepper. Broil the onions, turning occasionally with tongs, until slightly charred. Cool and chop.

In a small saucepan, bring the water to a boil. Add the couscous, stir, cover and remove from heat. Let stand for 5 minutes. Fluff the couscous with a fork. Let cool completely.

In a large bowl, combine the parsley, mint, and tomatoes. Add the green onions and couscous. Whisk together the lemon, lime, garlic, oil, and salt and pepper to taste. Pour over parsley mixture and combine well.

Postnatal depression is more common that many people realize. The issue can easily impact the entirely family, and requires both personal and professional efforts to remedy.

Some of the most commonly recommended essential oils during these difficult periods include Bergamot, Chamomile, and Neroli.

Simply use, with a carrier, in a full body massage, or with a bath.
