Tips on How to Love Yourself
by Cheryl Rainfield

Loving ourselves -- being as compassionate, gentle, and loving with ourselves as we would with a best friend can be pretty hard to do. This is especially true for women and survivors of abuse, including neglect.

  Essential Oil of the Month

Ylang Ylang

Latin: Canangium odoratum
Scent: Powerful, sweet, floral, exotic
Effects: Stimulating, Aphrodisiac
Antiseptic, antidepressant, calming, sedative, aphrodisiac

High blood pressure, stress, depression, & romance!

General Overview:

Ylang Ylang is a base or middle note oil, said to helpful in dealing with anxiety, panic, and shock. It is also believed to assist with feelings of resentment, guilt and/or jealousy. The oil has long been said to have substantial aphrodisiac qualities - thus its common use in sensual massage - a perfect valentines oil!

The oil is steam distilled from the flowers of a tall tree native to the Philippines and Far East. The name means 'flower of flowers' - these flowers come in many colors, with the yellow ones said to produce the highest quality oils.

Ylang Ylang is also known to have a balancing impact on one's hormonal system - in Indonesia Ylang Ylang flower petals are strewn upon the bed on wedding nights.

The oil blends well with Clary Sage, Geranium, Lavender, and Cedarwood oils.

Crab Gratin with Vanilla Rose Oil

This is so very simple to prepare, but oh how it delivers. The aromas of rose and vanilla are a great start on your way to a romantic evening...

Vanilla Rose Oil
1/2 cup canola oil
3 inch piece Vanilla bean
1 teaspoon dried rose flowers
Combine all ingredients into a small saucepan over low heat and simmer for 15 to 20 minutes. Cool and strain.

Crab Gratin
1 shallot, minced
1 6 ounce can crab meat, drained
4 tablespoons vanilla rose oil
1 tablespoon half and half
2 tablespoons dried breadcrumbs

Heat 2 tablespoons of the vanilla rose oil in a small skillet over medium-low heat. Add the shallot and cook until softened. Add the crab and 1 tablespoon more oil, and stir until heated and well coated. Transfer the crab to a small gratin dish (about 4 by 7 inches). Drizzle with the half and half. Sprinkle the bread crumbs evenly over the top, and finish with another drizzling of 1 tablespoon oil over the breadcrumbs. Place under a broiler until the crumbs are browned.
